NHL Poised to Sue NBA ![]() In a bold move, the National Hockey League announced Tuesday its plans to take the National Basketball Association to court for infringement. Jacque Roubeaudieaux, NHL spokesperson says "Our proud sport has a storied and established reputation as the leader in mindless brawling. We simply cannot stand by as they [the NBA] seek to infringe on our only remaining marketing niche." Roubeaudieaux was of course referring to the November 19th melee involving the Detriot Pistons, Indiana Pacers and scores of spectators in Detroit's Palace Stadium. "The media coverage it's gotten is [expletive] ridiculous!" declared Roubeaudieaux at Tuesday's press conference. "I mean jeez, they were even talkin' about it on Yan Can Cook for Christ's sake!" All professional sports have had their share of "bench-clearing, highlight reel, ESPN SportsCenter moments." But not since Pedro Martinez pushed 72-year-old Don Zimmer to the ground on October 11, 2003 has a sports fracas garnered so much media attention. Spectator involvement could be the reason. "Goin' up into the stands and pummelling the fans was deplorable," commented Roubeaudieaux. Adding with some disappointment, "We should have thought of that before they did." During the press conference, Roubeaudieaux asked for some audience participation -- saying "Okay everybody, finish this one-liner. 'I went to the fights Friday night and...'." "A hockey game broke out!" came the resounding reply. "Exactly!" exclaimed Roubeaudieaux. "The NHL has a reputation. And if it takes the courts to ensure our league's legacy... so be it." |
